We had an eye-opening moment last year when we worked out that Jo’burg Child Welfare has leaped from serving 55 000 children in 2017/18 to 98 000 children in 2018/2019.
That’s an increase of over 40 000 children in just one year.
It’s clear that demand for our services and facilities is growing day by day. This is a huge accomplishment. But with it, comes huge responsibility, and sadness, at the implications of such an increase.
We’re seeing more cases of abuse, neglect and child abandonment. We’re being called in for five abandoned babies a month. Never before have we had a number as high as this.
We’re also facing a growing number of AIDS orphans and HIV+ babies in need of shelter and special care.
This exponential growth puts pressure on us to care for more children the same amount of money, while still upholding our high standards.
So, when you’re deciding on a charity to support, we urge you to think of Jo’burg Child Welfare and the critical work we’re doing. Government provides only 30% of our funding; and we could not cope without the generosity of individuals and the private sector.
